Practical Nursing Program

While multiple advancement opportunities exist for LPNs – primarily as a supervisor over nursing assistants, those looking for more medical responsibilities may opt to evolve from an LPN to a RN. The Chester County Intermediate Unit Practical Nursing Program (PNP) has worked hard to develop relationships with a number of local colleges, universities and programs to make the step from LPN to RN as beneficial for the student as possible.

Step 1: LPN

Earned: CCIU Practical Nursing Program diploma

Average starting salary (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014):  $42,490 per year ($20.43/hour)

Step 2: RN

Earned: Associates degree in Nursing

Average starting salary (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014):  $66,640 per year ($32.04/hour)

PNP Partnerships:

·      Delaware County Community College provides PNP graduates advanced credit for Nursing 110

·      Excelsior College offers PNP graduates a special partnership discount.    Please use this link: http://www.excelsior.edu/web/partners/chester-county-intermediate-unit-pnp#tabbed-nav=tab5

Step 3: RN-BSN

Earned: Bachelors degree in Nursing

Average starting salary (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014):  $66,640 per year ($32.04/hour); same as step 2 but BSN offers more employment opportunities (hospitals typically require bachelor’s degree for RNs)

PNP Partnerships:

·      Delaware County Community College may help RNs continue onto:

o   West Chester University

o   Jefferson University

o   Drexel University

·       Excelsior College

Keep in mind that earning an RN or RN-BSN becomes financially easier when working as an LPN – not only are you earning a competitive salary but your employer may also provide tuition assistance. Classwork may also be easier due to your real-world experience!
